How is Hair Transplantation Performed?

Hair transplantation is generally performed by transplanting the hair follicles extracted from the back of the neck to the targeted hairless area.  This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia.

The stages of hair transplantation can be listed as follows;

1. Harvesting Hair Follicles from the Patient

The first stage of hair transplantation is harvesting hair follicles from the patient.  In the FUE method, the hair is harvested one by one from the patient using cylindrical needles. The possibility of damage to the hair follicles is minimized thanks to this method.

The needles used to harvest hair follicles are sharp and it is a hygienic procedure since it is used once in each patient. The hair follicles taken from the donor site of the patient are called graft in hair transplantation. The needles are chosen according to the patient’s hair structure.

2. Opening Channels in the Patient

After the hair follicles are harvested from the patient, the next stage is to open channels in the patient. The channels of the patient are opened using smooth and sharp sapphire blades. In this way, the natural hair transplantation angle in the patient can be set and the direction of hair follicles can be determined during the operation.

During the channel opening, the direction of the hair and the phase of the hair according to the scalp should be determined meticulously.  Opening channels using sapphire tips accelerates the healing process. Different tips can be used depending on the thickness of the patient’s hair follicles.

3. Hair Transplantation to the Patient

The last stage of the treatment is transplanting hair to the patient.  The hair follicles extracted are transplanted one by one at 40-45 degree angles on the opened channels.  In this way, a natural appearance can be achieved in the targeted area of the patient.

What Are Hair Transplantation Methods?

Three different methods are used in hair transplantation. The methods are chosen depending on the condition of the patient;

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

It is the oldest method used in hair transplantation. In this method, the scalp is incised to extract a thin strip from the back of the neck and the hair follicles here are transplanted in the targeted area. A scar with a certain length will remain in the neck area after this procedure.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

It is one of the most up-to-date and modern techniques used in hair transplantation. In the FUE procedure, hair transplantation is performed without any incision. The operation does not cause any scar in this procedure. During the procedure, hair follicles are extracted one by one from the back of the neck or from the donor site.  Then, hair transplantation is performed by transferring the hair follicles to the channels opened.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)

PRP has been one of the methods that is preferred in hair transplantation in recent years. In this procedure, the solution produced by the cells that provide coagulation in the blood is used in hair transplantation. The hair follicles become stronger in the hair transplantation performed using the PRP method. As a result, new hair can also grow strongly.

The method to be used in hair transplantation is preferred according to the hair and scalp structure of the person. Not every hair transplantation method can be used for every patient. Many factors such as the current condition and medical condition of the patient, the site chosen as the donor, and the doctor’s opinion are considered in selecting the hair transplantation method.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

This method is the procedure of transplanting the hair follicles harvested one by one from the donor site in the area to be transplanted using the Choi implanter pen.  The DHI method is a more practical procedure for both the hair transplantation specialist and the patient, as the harvesting and transplantation of the hair follicles are performed as a single procedure in this operation.

What to Be Careful About After the Hair Transplantation?

After the hair transplantation, the patient can be discharged on the same day. However, the patient should take care of the transplanted area. The issues to be considered after hair transplantation are as follows;

• ​Intensive sports activities that cause hair to sweat should be avoided for some time.
• It is recommended not to drive after hair transplantation.
• Depending on the hair transplantation method, patients may have post-operative edema and pain complaints. The patients can take painkillers prescribed for pain complaints after hair transplantation.
• The growth of new hair after hair transplantation takes a certain process. It is not right to wait for the hair to grow from the very start. Age, genetic conditions and lifestyle affect the growth time of new hair.
• The patient should avoid cutting and dyeing the new hair for some time.
• The recipient area should be protected from the sun at first and should not be exposed to hot environments.
